Arthur continued.
“Julian created distance deliberately. He wanted Victor convinced that you knew nothing.”
“And the anonymous money?” Emily asked.
“Julian.”

“The hospital bills?”

Daniel’s expression remained hard.
“And where was he?”
Arthur hesitated.
“Moving constantly.”

I stared at the lawyer.
“You told me Julian passed away.”
Arthur nodded slowly.
“He did.”
My chest tightened.
Despite everything Julian had done, some part of me had once loved him so fiercely that hearing those words still hurt.
Arthur reached into his briefcase.
“There is something else.”
He removed another envelope.
Across the front were eleven names.

“This is the envelope Julian told me never to give you unless Eleanor appeared voluntarily.”
