Richard must have heard them too.
“Chloe, please,” he said quickly. “Whatever Romano tells you, remember that I tried to warn you.”
A moment later, unfamiliar voices sounded in the hallway.
“Señor, aléjese de la puerta”.
Richard protested.
Then everything became quiet.
Dominic spoke through the phone.
“Chloe, my security team is outside. You’re safe for the moment.”

“I just wanted to save someone’s life.”

“No, you don’t understand. I didn’t ask for any of this. I didn’t ask to lose my job or have strangers threaten me. I didn’t ask for a mafia boss to show up with fifty thousand dollars. I just saw somebody who couldn’t breathe.”
My voice broke.
“And I couldn’t walk away.”
